Alabama Golf Association Announces 2025 Board of Directors and Honors Joe H. King and Sadie Roberts Award Recipients

HOOVER, AL (April 3, 2025) – On Saturday, March 22, 2025, the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) held its Annual Membership Meeting, Annual Board of Directors Meeting, and Annual Awards Luncheon at the Shoal Creek Club in Shoal Creek, AL.

Annual Membership and Board of Directors Meeting

At the AGA Annual Membership Meeting, Joey Dzwonkowski of Mobile was elected President of the Board of Directors and began serving the first of two one-year terms. Previously, Dzwonkowski served as the association’s Vice-President (2023-2024) and has been a member of the board since 2008. An active volunteer, he has contributed extensively to the organization, including serving on the AGA College Scholarship Committee and the Joe H. King Award Committee. Dzwonkowski is also a two-time State Four-Ball Champion, having won the title in 1996 and 2002 alongside his partner Richard Jeffers. A notable athlete, he was crowned the 1979 Boys State Junior Champion, further showcasing his dedication to the game. With years of experience and a passion for promoting golf, Dzwonkowski’s leadership in the AGA continues to make a lasting impact.
 
Other elected officers include: Susan West of Tuscaloosa (Vice-President), Will Swift of Vestavia (Secretary), and Derrel Curry of Birmingham (Treasurer).

Walker Grant of Alexander City concluded his elected term and now assumes the Immediate Past President position. Under Grant’s tenure, the AGA witnessed record tournament participation and membership growth and successfully grew Alabama’s first golf-themed license plate initiative across the state launching the Drive Fore 1,000 campaign. 

Re-elected AGA Board of Directors members are: Alan Allgood of Fairhope; Sam Audia of Birmingham; Bernadette Beavers-Forrest of Hoover; Jan Berry of Madison; Flip Bradley of Huntsville; Forrest Crabtree of Mobile; Patrick Drummond of Birmingham; Joey Dzwonkowski of Mobile; Freeman Fite of Anniston; Nancy Gavin of Jacksons Gap; John Goldasich of Birmingham; Walker Grant of Alexander City; Brinson Holder of Point Clear; Joey Holley of Troy; Hoyt W. Howell, Jr. of Anniston; Lucie King of Tuscaloosa; Larry Kniseley of Daphne; William V. Lewis of Tuscaloosa; Chris Marr of Mobile; William C. McGowin of Montgomery; Chris Nix of Vestavia Hills; Will Pearce of Selma; Will Swift of Birmingham; Sam Vann of Dothan; Philip Weaver of Tuscaloosa; and Susan West of Tuscaloosa.
 
Three additional board members were elected to serve the first of two one-year terms on the AGA Executive Committee, along with the four officers: Immediate Past President Walker Grant of Alexander City, Sam Audia of Birmingham, and Chris Marr of Mobile.

Joe H. King Award

Larry Kniseley of Daphne has been honored with the 2025 Joe H. King Award, the highest distinction presented by the AGA in amateur golf. Kniseley has been an integral part of the AGA Board of Directors since 2009 and has dedicated decades to the game as a rules official at numerous AGA and USGA events. His commitment to golf was further recognized in 2024 when he received the prestigious Ike Grainger Award from the United States Golf Association (USGA) for 25 years of exemplary volunteer service.  The Joe H. King Award is presented to individuals from Alabama who have demonstrated either a career of outstanding playing achievements or have made lasting contributions through their dedication and service to the game. Kniseley’s unwavering commitment and passion for amateur golf embody the very essence of this distinguished honor. “We are thrilled to recognize Larry for his tremendous contributions to the game of golf in Alabama and beyond,” said Jeremy Gardner, AGA Executive Director. “His dedication to the sport, its players, and the integrity of the game exemplifies the true spirit of the Joe H. King Award.” Kniseley’s legacy of service continues to inspire the next generation of golfers and volunteers, reinforcing the values and traditions that make the game of golf so special.

Sadie Roberts Award

Allen Hasbrouck of Huntsville received the 2024 Sadie Roberts Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2013, combining his love for golf and volunteerism, Allen signed up to be a scoring volunteer at an AGA event at Huntsville Country Club and has been a dedicated volunteer since. Over the years, he has attended multiple Rules Workshops, driven countless miles, and stayed hundreds of nights at hotels around the state to support the Alabama Golf Association’s efforts. His dedication to service extends beyond his military career, making him a true asset to both his community and the Alabama Golf Association.
 
About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 30,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. A full-time professional staff of seven individuals handles day-to-day activities.

Based in Hoover, the AGA is the USGA's Allied Golf Association in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the World Handicap System including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating, and Rules of Golf & Handicapping education. The AGA annually conducts 24 championships; team match competitions for men, women, junior and seniors; and the AHSAA high school golf championship. The AGA manages the Junior Golf Alabama program that is a joint venture between the AGA and Alabama-NW Florida PGA Section.

In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
