Auburn University Club Hosts of the 1st Alabama Women's State Match Play Championship and 6th Alabama Women's State Senior Match Play Championship
AUBURN, AL (July 8, 2024) – The Alabama Golf Association’s 1st Alabama Women's State Match Play Championship and 6th Alabama Women's State Senior Match Play Championship will be held at Auburn University Club in Auburn, AL from July 9-11, 2024.

This year marks the first-ever playing of the Alabama Women’s State Match Play Championship and the sixth playing of the Alabama Women’s State Senior Match Play Championship. Theresa Mahlik of Madison defeated Lea Green of McCalla to capture the State Senior Match Play Championship title at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper, AL in 2023.

Entries for the Alabama Women's State Match Play are open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. There will be two divisions: Championship and Tournament. Players must select their division during online registration.

Entries for the Alabama Women's State Senior Match Play are open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. Player must have reached 50th birthday by July 9, 2024. There will be two divisions: Championship and Tournament. Players must select their division during online registration.

Women’s State Match Play Championship Format
  • 18 holes of gross individual stroke play to determine seeding within each Division. 
  • Championship Division will be cut to low 16 players from the stroke play qualifier and the remaining players will be placed into flights according to the number of entries within the division. A tie for the last qualifier’s place in the Championship Division will be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole playoff. Players are responsible for making themselves available at the scoreboard for play-off instructions. The play-off holes and their order of play will be determined by the Committee. Championship Division Flights will be divided into flights of four (4) to compete at match play based on qualifying round score. USGA recommended scorecard playoff procedure (last 9, last 6, etc.) will be used to decide a flight break tie. 
  • Tournament Division players will be divided into flights of four (4) to compete at match play based on qualifying round score. USGA recommended scorecard playoff procedure (last 9, last 6, etc.) will be used to decide a flight break tie. 
  • Match Play Seeding: General numerical draw will be used. For purposes of determining places in the draw, ties in qualifying rounds for the #1 seed in the Championship Flight will be decided by USGA recommended scorecard playoff procedure (last 9, last 6, etc.) and all others will be decided by lot. 
  • Match Play stipulated round is 18 holes. In the event of a match standing all square after 18 holes, the stipulated round is extended on a hole-by-hole basis until a winner is determined. 
  • In each division, all players that lose in round one will be placed in a consolation flight. 
  • Overall Champion is the Championship Division winner.
Women’s State Senior Match Play Championship Format

  • Championship Division will be cut to the low 8 players from the stroke play qualifier and the remaining players will be placed into flights according to the number of entries within the division. A tie for the last qualifier’s place in the Championship Division will be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole playoff. Players are responsible for making themselves available at the scoreboard for play-off instructions. The play-off holes and their order will be determined by the Committee. 
  • Senior Tournament players will be divided into flights of four (4) to compete at match play based on qualifying round score. USGA recommended scorecard playoff procedure (last 9, last 6, etc.) will be used to decide a flight break tie.
  • Match Play Seeding: General numerical draw will be used. For purposes of determining places in the draw, ties in qualifying rounds for the #1 seed in the First Flight will be decided by matching scorecards according to the USGA recommendation shown in the Committee Procedures section within the Rules of Golf – “Matching Scorecards”.
  • Match Play stipulated round is 18 holes. In the event of a match standing all square after 18 holes, the stipulated round is extended on a hole-by-hole basis until a winner is determined. 
  • All players that lose in round one will be placed in a consolation flight. 
  • Senior Champion is the Senior Championship Division winner.

This Championship is conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the SGA Board of Directors. AGA staff also administers day-to-day operations of the Elite Amateur Golf Series.
