DECATUR, AL – (July 3, 2024) Final results of the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship Local Qualifying hosted at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, Alabama, July 3, 2024.

Eight qualifying spots were available at this site. Two alternate positions were also available. 

Eighty-four players competed to advance to the final qualifying stage of the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship.

Thad Whitfield of Signal Mountain, Tennessee posted five-under 66 to secure medalist honors and claim the 1st qualifying spot.

The following players will also advance to the final qualifying stage for the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship:
  • Jackson Mitchell of Athens, Alabama (-4)
  • Taylor Jones of Decatur, Alabama (-4)
  • Will Davis of Jacksonville, Florida (-4)
  • Luke Koenig of Statham, Georgia (-3)
  • Aiden Arce of Davie, Florida (-3)
  • Jj Zimmer of Humboldt, Tennessee (-2)
  • Bailey Sutter of Cullman, Alabama (-2)
After a three man playoff for the first and second alternate seats, Cole Imig of Birmingham, Alabama and Brett Barron of Johns Creek, Georgia finished as first and second alternates, respectively.

Eight players advanced to the Final Qualifying Stage where they will play for the chance to advance to the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., August 12-18, 2024.

The 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship Local Qualifying is conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.


About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 28,000 individuals. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the SGA Board of Directors. AGA staff also administers day-to-day operations of the Elite Amateur Golf Series.
