The 2023 Southern Junior Cup team, representing Alabama, was victorious at this year’s event, earning a total of 15.0 points to defeat Arkansas and Missouri teams. This is Alabama’s seventh consecutive win.
Original Wednesday starting times were delayed until 11:00 a.m. and modified to a shotgun start. Play was briefly suspended at 11:13 a.m. due to dangerous weather conditions. After a night of heavy rainfall Wednesday, Thursday play was canceled due to unplayable course conditions.
On Wednesday, all teams competed in mixed four-ball and mixed alternate shot competitions, earning 1.0 point per team victory.

“This event is always one of my favorites because you don’t often get to play on the same team as the people you compete against in your state,” said Watts. “Everybody on the team knows each other very well and that’s why I think our team is always strong.
Gabi Nicastro, 2023 Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Champion, competed with Morgan Slaton in mixed four-ball to win 6 & 5 against Team Arkansas. They also competed together in mixed alternate shot to win 6 & 5 (vs. Arkansas) and 6 & 4 (vs. Missouri).
“Morgan and I were a great team. We would always pick each other up when the other wasn’t doing too good, and I really enjoy getting to play with the guys,” said Nicastro. “I definitely learn a lot playing in events like these and I hope to play in many more in the future.”
Twelve Alabama junior players were selected for the 2023 Southern Junior Cup team. The Junior Boys and Junior Girls teams are six players each, recruited through the AGA team selection process.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
