Mac Murphy fired a four-under par 67 to lead after the first round
First round results of the 18th Alabama State Match Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, Ala. on Thursday, August 2, 2018 (7032 yards, par 35-36—71, 73.9/123).
The 18th Alabama State Match Play Championship began today with 46 players teeing off at Burningtree Country Club. Players enjoyed cool weather with little wind and fortunately missed stormy weather.
Burningtree Country Club’s own Mac Murphy sits in first place following round one. His four-under par 67 was bogey-free and included birdies at holes three, five, 16, and 17. He leads by two shots going into the second qualifying round.
In solo second place is Woodie Eubanks of Oneonta who posted a two-under par 69. Eubanks’ round included five birdies, four of which came on the back side, where he fired a 32. Eubanks is a past Alabama Mid-Amateur Champion (2008), and Alabama State Four-Ball Champion (2011). There are three players tied for third place at one-under par including Will Swift of Vestavia Hills who has six state titles to his name.
Defending champion Matthew Gourgeot carded a seven-over par 78 in round one. Gourgeot defeated Robby Prater 2 and 1 at Wynlakes Golf and Country Club in last year’s championship. He is eleven shots back of Murphy and three shots outside of the current cut line.
The second qualifying round will tee off tomorrow at 7:30a.m. at Burningtree Country Club.
