Caroline Waldrop of Birmingham fires a one-over par 71 in round one
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Round one results of the 55th Alabama Girls State Junior Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. on Monday, June 25, 2018 (5800 yards (35-35—70), 74.3/137).
The 55th Alabama Girls State Junior Championship teed off today with 41 players competing at Montgomery Country Club. Players faced very hot and humid conditions throughout the day with the heat index reaching 105 degrees.
Caroline Waldrop of Birmingham fired a one-over par 71 to take the lead after round one. Waldrop’s round included three birdies, one of which was a chip-in on the 386-yard par 4 third hole. She leads by one shot going into round two.
In solo second place is Athens' Ally Williams who shot a two-over par 72. Williams had nines of 34 and 38, and a total of three birdies on day one.
Defending champion, Michaela Morard of Huntsville posted a three-over 73 with halves of 37 and 36. Morard won last year’s championship at Valley Hill Country Club by fourteen shots. She comes into this year’s championship following a domination at Canebrake Country Club last week in the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
Leading the fourteen to fifteen age division is Hartselle’s Mikayla Dubnik. Dubnik carded a three-over par 73 with four birdies, four bogeys, and a triple bogey on hole fifteen.
Elle Webber of Huntsville is leading the twelve to thirteen age division after a ten-over par 80. There are six players in the twelve to thirteen division and they play the course at 5400 yards.
