The 28th edition of the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship began today with 39 players competing for the title. Cloud-cover and low humidity made for perfect scoring conditions at Canebrake Club in Athens.

Huntsville’s Michaela Morard blew away the field on day one with an exceptional nine-under par 63. Her impressive round included eight birdies and an eagle on her final hole, the 431-yard par five eighteen. Morard previously won the championship in 2016 at the age of fourteen.

Five shots back from Morard in a tie for second place are Mychael O’Berry of Hoover and Mary Kate Horton of Birmingham with a pair of 68s. O’Berry posted a bogey-free round with four birdies and Horton made five birdies in the first round.

Defending champion, Cammie Bentley of Northport, who won last year’s title at NorthRiver Yacht Club, shot a respectable level-par 72 and finds herself in a tie for seventh place heading into round two.
