HOOVER, AL – The Alabama Golf Association’s 28th Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship will be held at Canebrake Club, Athens, AL, from June 20-22. The par 72 course will welcome 40 players this coming Wednesday.
Opening in 1998, Canebrake Club prides itself on its natural form that includes many water features, rolling hills, and tree-lined fairways. It was designed to provide an enjoyable test for all levels of golfers.
The Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship is competed over three rounds of stroke play, 18 holes daily. Tee times will be between 7:30am and 9:40am each day from the first tee. The player with the lowest 54-hole score following the completion of the third round will win the title of Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Champion. The event is open to spectators and players may use caddies.
Last year’s event was won by Cammie Bentley of Northport on the first playoff hole over Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort. Bentley posted rounds of 72-72-74 for a total of 218 (+5).
Championship History & Records
History: This year marks the 28th playing of the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship and the second time that Canebrake Club has played host to the Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Alison Hovatter of Meridianville won the title in 2014 when the event was last played at Canebrake Club. The Championship was first played in 1990 at Gulf Shores Country Club in Gulf Shores with Virginia Derby winning the inaugural championship. Cammie Bentley of Northport claimed her third stroke play championship victory by winning the title in 2017 at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Prizes
Awards will be presented to the top scores in each Division after 54 holes, as well as the overall Champion. Low Mid-Amateur in the Championship Division will be awarded. In addition, the Champion will have her name engraved on the permanent trophy and may take possession of the trophy for the ensuing year.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals.
