Auburn, AL - First round results of the 21st Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Moore’s Mill Club in Auburn, AL on Friday, May 18, 2018 (Ages 50-64: 6433 yards, par 36-36—72, 70.7/129; Ages 65+ (Super Senior): 5419 yards, par 36-36—72, 66.5/116).
Claud Cooper of Birmingham fired a three-under 69 to take a one shot lead over Joey Holley of Troy and Scott Johnston of Auburn after the first round at Moore’s Mill Club.
Defending champion Robert Nelson of Fairhope carded a five-over 77 to stand in a tie for 28th place.
In the 65+ Super Senior division, defending Super Senior champion John Gibbs of Oneonta posted a one-under 71 to hold a one stroke lead over Fred Clark of Mobile.
After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 48 scores and ties in the Overall Championship Division (Ages 50-64) and the low 12 scores and ties in the 65+ (Super Senior Division) for the final round.
Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by May 18, 2018, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 10.4 (ages 50-64) and 15.4 (age 65+).

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 13 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.
