HOOVER, AL (April 19, 2018) - The 2018 Alabama Golf Association championship season kicks-off with the 36thAlabama State Four-Ball Championship on April 26-29, 2018 at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa, AL. This is the second time that Indian Hills has hosted the State Four-Ball championship previously playing host in 2002, which was won by the team of Joey Dzwonkowski and Richard Jeffers. Jeffers is in the field this year playing with Hamp Andrews of Daphne.
52 teams from across the state are scheduled to play in this year’s championship including defending champion Matt Johnson of Dothan. Johnson and Heath West of Dothan won the title last year at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika with a 3 and 1 victory over Alan Coshatt of Birmingham & Austin Coggin of Vestavia Hills. Johnson will partner with Lew Mitchell of Dothan in this year’s Championship.
Championship format is 36 holes of four-ball stroke play to determine 16 sides for match play. A tie for the last qualifier’s place (16th seed) will be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole play-off. Awards will be presented to the Champions and stroke play qualifying medalists. Merchandise prizes are awarded to top finishers. Champions will have their names engraved on the Harry Pritchett Trophy housed at the AGA office.
The course, renovated in 1997 by John LaFoy, will play at 6544 yards and a par of 71 for the championship.
Championship was first played in 1983 with Benjamin Dowdy & Joe Terrell winning the inaugural event. Dowdy & Terrell went on to win a total of four times (1983, 84, 88, 89), giving them the most Four-Ball titles in the event’s history.
The Alabama State Four-Ball Championship is open to sides of male amateur golfers who are legal residents of Alabama and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. Maximum allowable combined team handicap is 16.8 under the USGA Handicap System™.
