Stewart Whitt of Athens Takes 36-Hole Lead
Decatur, AL - Second round results of the 29th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, AL on Saturday, September 23, 2017 (7032 yards, par 35-36—71, 73.2/138).
Stewart Whitt of Athens carded a one-over 72 (143) to take a one shot lead heading into the final round of the 29th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship at Burningtree Country Club.
Claud Cooper of Birmingham and 2014 champion Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham are in second place at 144.
Round one leader Mark Woods of Homewood posted a second round 79 to fall back into 10th place at 147.
Defending champion Clay Guerin of Hoover is tied for 11th at 148.
There are 11 players within five shots of the lead shaping up for a final round shootout for the title.
Average score for the field was 78.5 in round two versus 78.8 in round one.
Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play with no cut this year. Merchandise awards will be given to the fifteen lowest scores of the tournament. The champion will have his name engraved on the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy that is housed at the AGA office and receives a five year exemption into the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship and the Alabama State Match Play Championship. Top 10 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship at Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham and Top 8 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama State Match Play.
Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 12 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship.
