Mark Woods of Homewood Leads Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship
Decatur, AL - First round results of the 29th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, AL on Friday, September 22, 2017 (7032 yards, par 35-36—71, 73.2/138).
Mark Woods of Homewood fired a three-under 68 to take the first round lead at Burningtree Country Club.
Two shots back after an opening round 70 is 2008 champion Woodie Eubanks of Oneonta.
Defending champion Clay Guerin of Hoover is seven shots off the lead after an opening round 75.
Only two players broke par on the 7032-yard George Cobb design with the field averaging 78.8 for round one.
Highlight of the day was a hole-in-one by Brandon Griffin of Birmingham on the 172-yard 14th hole using an 8-iron.
Championship is 54 holes of stroke play with no cut. Merchandise awards will be given to the fifteen lowest scores of the tournament. The champion will have his name engraved on the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy that is housed at the AGA office and receives a five year exemption into the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship and the Alabama State Match Play Championship. Top 10 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship at Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham and Top 8 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama State Match Play.
Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 12 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.
