Burningtree Country Club in Decatur will host the Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship for the first time fromSeptember 22-24, 2017.
66 players is scheduled to compete in the 29th edition of this championship over 54 holes of stroke play. Due to this year’s field size, there will not be a 36-hole cut. The lowest score for 54 holes will be the Champion. In the event of a tie for the Championship, a hole-by-hole play-off will be held immediately following play. Initial groupings are set for the first two days; the field will be re-paired by score after the second round.
Last year, Clay Guerin of Hoover won the title at the Country Club of Mobile by posting an eight-under 205 total for a five stroke victory. The Championship was first played in 1989 with Emile Vaughn winning the inaugural event. Mike Greer and Scott Weaver each have 3 victories, with Weaver winning his consecutively (2001-2003).
Notable players to watch include: Clay Guerin of Hoover (defending champion and #4 ranked amateur in Alabama); Matt Gourgeot of Decatur (#1 ranked amateur in Alabama and 2017 State Match Play Champion); Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham (#2 ranked amateur in Alabama); Claud Cooper of Birmingham (2017 U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Senior Amateur participant); Steve Hudson of Birmingham (#1 ranked senior amateur in Alabama).

Prizes & Exemptions
An award will be presented to the Champion. Merchandise prizes are awarded to the top finishers. The champion will have his name engraved on the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy and may take possession of the trophy for the ensuing year. Exemptions Earned; Champion receives a 5 year exemption into the Alabama State Amateur Championship and the Alabama State Match Play Championship (2018-2022). Players finishing in the Top 10 (and ties) will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama State Amateur Championship. Players finishing in the Top 8 (and ties) will receive an exemption into the 2018 Alabama State Match Play Championship.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.
AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
