Alabama Names USGA Women's State Team Members

Hoover, AL – The Alabama Golf Association (AGA) has announced its selections to represent the State of Alabama at the 12th and final playing of the USGA Women’s State Team Championship at The Club at Las Campanas (Sunset Course) in Santa Fe, New Mexico on September 26-28. This is the first USGA Championship at the Jack Nicklaus design that opened in 2000.

The AGA selection criteria for the USGA Women’s State Team members is the top two eligible players from the Alabama Women’s Amateur Rankings, as of August 21, 2017; and one player selected by the AGA Championship Committee.  State Associations are given the option to choose their teams by any method, with the one restriction, college players are not eligible due to NCAA bylaws.

Team Alabama will be represented by Susan West, of Tuscaloosa; Cammie Gray, of Northport; and Michaela Morard, of Huntsville.

Susan West, of Tuscaloosa is a State Team selection for the second time, previously being a member of the 2013 team.  West is the 2015 and 2016 Alabama Women’s State Senior Champion and the runner-up in the 2017 Women’s Southern Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship. This event will mark her 12th USGA Championship which includes seven Women’s Mid-Amateurs, three Women’s Seniors, and two State Teams. Currently ranked eighth in the Alabama Women’s Amateur Rankings and the number one ranked Women’s Senior Amateur in Alabama.

Cammie Gray, of Northport is a first time State Team Selection and a former member of the University of Alabama Women’s Golf Team.  Gray is the 2012, 2013, and 2017 Alabama Women’s Stroke Play champion and the 2013 Alabama Women’s State Amateur Champion. This marks her fourth USGA Championship which includes one Girls Junior and two Women’s Amateurs.  Currently the second ranked Women’s Amateur in Alabama.

Michaela Morard, of Huntsville is a State Team selection for the second time, previously being a member of the 2015 team.  She is the 2017 AGA Girls State Junior Champion and made the Round of 64 at both the U.S. Girls’ Junior and U.S. Women’s Amateur. The 2020 University of Alabama commit’s State Team appearance will mark her third 2017 USGA Championship and fourth overall appearance.  Morard is currently ranked fourth in the Alabama Women’s Amateur Ranking and is the 2017 Alabama Golf Association State Junior Female Player of the Year.

Team Alabama will be captained by Chris Marr of Mobile, who previously has served as the non-playing State Team Captain and is on the Alabama Golf Association Board of Directors.

About USGA State Team

The USGA Women’s State Team Championship was first played in 1995, grew out of the celebration of the USGA’s Centennial, and was modeled after the biennial World Amateur Team Championship.

The field includes three players to represent each of the fifty states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.  The format of the tournament will be 54 holes of stroke play.  The two lowest of the three scores will be counted for the team’s daily total.  Alabama won the second USGA Women’s State Team Championship in 1997 with the team of Virginia Derby Grimes, Kathy Hartwiger, and Beth Williams.
