Ryan Mayberry of Birmingham Posts Six-Under 66 to Lead by One Stroke After First Round at Bent Brook

BESSEMER, AL – First round results of the 101st Alabama State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer, AL on Thursday, June 8, 2017 (7337 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.6/132).
Ryan Mayberry of Birmingham holds a one-shot lead after firing a six-under 66 to take a one shot lead at Bent Brook. Mayberry, a former golf coach at Samford University in Birmingham, played an outstanding round carding five birdies and an eagle that was offset by a lone bogey.
Defending champion, Turk Pettit of Auburn started his title defense with an opening round of 73 placing him seven shots back.
31 players are under par through the first 18 holes with the field average score of 74.87.
Alabama State Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 12 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.
