Claud Cooper (L) and Clay Guerin (R) Share Alabama State Mid-Amateur Lead
MOBILE, AL - First round results of the 28th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Mobile in Mobile, AL on Friday, September 23, 2016 (6748 yards, par 35-36—71, 72.1/123).
Claud Cooper of Birmingham and Clay Guerin of Hoover each fired a three-under 68 to share the first round lead at the Country Club of Mobile.
One shot back after an opening round of 69 is 2014 champion Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham and Country Club of Mobile member Matt Ritchie of Mobile.
Six players broke par on the 6748-yard Donald Ross design with the field averaging 77.6 for round one.
Defending champion Jeff Taylor of Montgomery is not in this year’s field to defend the title he won last year at his home course, Wynlakes Golf & Country Club.
After 36 holes the field of 82 players will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round. Awards will be given to the five lowest scores of the tournament. The champion will have his name engraved in the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy that is housed at the AGA office and receives a ten year exemption into the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship. Top 10 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2017 Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship at Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer.
Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.
