POINT CLEAR, AL – Final results of the 3rd Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match hosted by The Lakewood Club (Dogwood) in Point Clear, AL on Friday, August 12, 2016 (Amateurs 6000 yards, par 36-36—72; Seniors: 5600 yards, par 36-36--72).
Georgia wins the rain-shortened Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match by a final score of 10.5 points over its counterparts from Alabama and Florida. Alabama finished in second with 8.5 points and Florida in third with 8.0 points.
Players began the three-ball round at 8:00am in rainy conditions with the hopes of the storms to move around the Point Clear area. Play was suspended at 10:00am due to increased heavy rain and severe weather in the Mobile Bay area. After waiting for two hours, the tournament committee announced at 12:00pm that the Dogwood course was unplayable and it was unlikely for the rain to cease. Therefore scores was reverted back to Day 1 results with Georgia declared the winner.
The victory is the first for Georgia with Florida winning the previous two contests held in 2012 and 2014. The host site and state rotates with Florida scheduled to host in 2018 and Georgia in 2020.
Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match, a biannual event, format consists of 18 holes of match play with Four-Ball, Foursomes, and three-ball (singles) match play sessions. Four-Ball session was shortened to 9-hole matches due to limited daylight. Each match is worth 1 point. Half point to each side for a tie. Each state competes against the other two states in an equal number of matches. This invitation only event is comprised of a select group of eight female amateurs and four female seniors (age 50+) selected by each state golf association.
