JASPER, AL – Final match play results of the 84th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Musgrove Country Club in Jasper, AL on Friday, June 24, 2016 (Championship Division=6004 yards, par 35-36—71, 74.2/139; Tournament Division=4987 yards, par 35-36—71, 68.5/117).
2014 champion Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort defeated Virginia Green of Point Clear, 3 and 2, to win her second Alabama Women’s Amateur Championship title. Wood and Green previously met in the finals at the 2014 event where Wood took a 2 and 1 decision over Green at NorthRiver in Tuscaloosa.
Green took a 1 up lead twice thru eight holes. Wood then won 4 of the next 5 holes starting with a six-foot birdie putt on the par three ninth hole to sprint out to a 3 up lead. Green could not close the gap with halved holes on 14 thru 16 that sealed a 3 and 2 win for Wood.
“Keys to this week was chipping, lots of chipping,” Wood said. “It’s always a special feeling to win the State Amateur especially two out of three years. Virginia (Green) is one of the best competitors that I have ever played with. Her short game is phenomenal.”
