The team of Del Wood III and Doug Davis captured the 21st State Senior Four Ball Championship at The Ledges of Huntsville Mountain on Sunday after rounds of 64-66-65—195, 18-under-par. They won by two over Dana Amberson of Decatur and Ray Halbrooks of Hartselle who combined for rounds of 67-66-64—197.
Wood of Vestavia Hills and Birmingham’s Davis have now won both the Senior and Regular Four Ball State Championships. Wood won the Regular with Alan Coshatt and Davis won with Tommy Coggin.
They began the final round trailing overnight leaders Clint Compton and Mike Lewis by two, but a strong final round from Wood and Davis was good enough, as Compton and Lewis struggled the final day.
Wood and Davis had birdies on Nos. 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 against bogeys on Nos. 10 and 18.
They played together in the championship last year in their first year to be eligible as a team, but did not factor. They certainly did this year.
“We’ve known each other a long time and have played in a number of Member-Member tournaments at Vestavia (Country Club),” Davis said.
“We started talking about pairing up (in the State Senior Four Ball) a few years ago and it was a goal of ours to do well in it.”
Davis credited Wood with strong play in the final round.
“I played OK, but Del played real well. We knew were in the lead towards the end, but were never totally comfortable.
“There are not that many players to have won the junior and senior four ball. That’s pretty cool.”
Wood said his back “had been out of kilter for about four months,” but getting ready for this championship got him going.
“It feels really good right now to win. The whole situation is very special.”
It also marked the final Alabama Golf Association championship of the season.
