Georgia Retains Title In Tightest Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match Finish Ever

Winners of the 6th Women's Southeastern Challenge Match: Team Georgia

OCALA, FL. (Aug. 12, 2024) – Final results of the 6th Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match, hosted by Club Adena in Ocala, FL, on August 9-11, 2024. The event highlights 8-woman teams representing Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Each team consists of four amateurs and four senior amateurs (age 50+) selected by their respective state golf association.

It was Team Georgia who defended their title and raised the trophy, yet again. In the closest match in the history of the event, Georgia grabbed the victory by only half of a point over Team Alabama. With all three teams within a point of each other, the final points total stood at Georgia earning 14.5 points, Alabama with 14 points, and Florida with 13.5 points.

Claiming victory, Team Georgia now has four total victories. Team Florida holds two titles and Team Alabama has none to date. 

Three-Ball Singles Matches – Sunday, August 11  
Team Alabama secured 7.50 points in the Three-Ball Singles Matches.  

Susan West earned two points. She defeated her Florida opponent, winning 3 & 2, and her Georgia opponent, winning 3 & 1. 

Lea Green defeated her Florida opponent 5 & 4 and her Georgia opponent 3 & 2, earning another two points for Team Alabama. 

Cym Doggett tied her Florida opponent and defeated her Georgia opponent 2 & 1 to earn Team Alabama one and a half points. 

Lauren Thompson and Molly Brown Davidson both defeated their Georgia opponents, each earning one point for Team Alabama. Thompson defeated her opponent 6 & 5; Davidson defeated her opponent 1 up. 

Final Results:  
  • Georgia – 14.5  
  • Alabama – 14.0 
  • Florida – 13.5 
The 7th Women’s Southeastern Challenge Matches will be contested in 2026, with Georgia hosting.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the SGA Board of Directors. AGA staff also administers day-to-day operations of the Elite Amateur Golf Series.
