Noto Wins 36th Southern Junior In Old Waverly Playoff
WEST POINT, MS. – Andrew Noto, who lost his overnight lead in the final round of the 36th Southern Junior Golf Championship, recovered to win by wedging to within four feet a birdie 3 on the first playoff hole June 12 at the Old Waverly Club. Noto, a long-hitting 18-year-old from suburban New Orleans, took a one-stroke lead into the final hole of regulation, but pushed his drive far right and nearly out-of-bounds. Chipping out from behind a stand of pines, Noto reached the 18th green with his third, but missed a 15-foot par putt to drop into a playoff with Atlanta’s Franco Castro. Both had completed regulation play at 5-under-par 211 to lead the featured 15-18 age group. On the first playoff hole, Castro, 16, slid a 20-foot birdie attempt inches to the right of the hole, then watched as Noto nailed the four-footer and the title that carried with it an automatic berth in the 102nd Southern Amateur a month later Orlando. “I talked to Michael Smith, who won this tournament a few years ago,” said Noto. “He said it means everything to your amateur career. It gets me into a lot of other big tournaments.” Noto said he passed on a chance to play in a regional Southern Am qualifier near his home, telling friends he was going to win the Southern Junior to earn his berth that way. He delivered. A day earlier, 15-year-old Fletcher Johnson of Belden, MS made the biggest move of the second round, posting a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 that was just one stroke off the competitive course record. Johnson, two and three years younger than most contenders, surged into the early lead, but was later passed by Noto to lead after 36 holes. In the final round, young Johnson was disheartened early when putts for eagle and birdie lipped out and he fell well off the pace. It was a chance for Noto to redeem himself after coughing up the final round lead two weeks earlier in the Louisiana Amateur. In the 13-14 age division, Sean Romero of Texarkana, AR, came from behind with a strong final round of 69 to pass 36-hole leader Winburne Hughes of Memphis and win by four shots. Arkansas, led by Matt Mabrey of Little Rock, won the State Team Title, which goes to the state with the best total score for four players from any state over the first two rounds. The low four Arkansans totaled 581, two ahead of Florida. The tournament boasted 166 top juniors from 22 states and three foreign countries.
