Webb Simpson Takes 101st Southern Amateur Title
PINEHURST, NC - Webb Simpson scrambled for par on the final hole for a dramatic, one-stroke victory in the 101st Southern Amateur Championship played July 18-21 at C.C. of North Carolina Dogwood Course. Simpson, a Wake Forest junior, closed 68-272, making a 6-foot par putt on the closing hole to avoid a three-way playoff with charging Southern Cal Trojan Tom Glissmeyer and South Korean Seung Su Han.
Glissmeyer came charging out the pack, tying the competitive course record 63, which had been freshly set three days earlier by Orlando's Sam Saunders in the opening round. The Southern Cal junior birdied five of the first six holes to launch his charge. On the 18th hole, Glissmeyer, playing four groups ahead of Simpson, left a 25-foot eagle putt just short that would have lowered the record and ultimately forced a playoff.
But it came down to Simpson needing only a par on that closing, uphill par-5 hole to win. He bunkered his drive, whacked out a 3-iron to a 120-yard, blind approach to the hole, and sent a pitching wedge five yards over the green. The gallery, mostly pulling for Simpson who grew up learning golf on the CCNC course, gasped.
"I thought I was right on line and perfect," Simpson recalled. "My heart sank when I didn't hear a reaction from the crowd." He chipped out of the heavy, greenside rough to within six feet and holed the par putt to yank a belated whoop from the onlookers.
Having won the Southern Am two years earlier in Myrtle Beach, Simpson joins such elite golf names as Bobby Jones, Lanny Wadkins, Vinny Giles and Justin Leonard on the short list of players who have won the storied old tournament more than once. The victory also earned Simpson a return trip in the spring of 2008 to play in the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, which annually awards a berth to the Southern Am winner. The win also bolstered his bid for a berth on the U.S. Walker Cup team. That honor came two weeks later for Simpson. Buddy Marucci, U.S. captain, played in the Southern Am to observe some of the top candidates.
"It was a tough day," said Simpson. "It was nice to have my dad on the bag to calm me down every now and then. The wind blew and I felt the pressure to perform for all the people out there pulling for me."
Saunders, Palmer's grandson and a rising sophomore on the Clemson golf team, grabbed first-round attention with that first 63. He was overhauled during the second round by Simpson, defending champ Kyle Stanley and Garrett Osborn of Birmingham. The four were knotted atop the leaderboard at the tournament midpoint at 8-under-par 136.
With a third-round 68, Simpson eased in front by a single shot to set the stage for the final-round drama.
