LUFKIN, Texas -Cody Freeman of
Woodward, Oklahoma., earned his biggest victory in golf when he
won the 95th annual Southern Amateur Championship at Crown Colony
Country Club. Whether he returns to defend is still a matter of
self-debate.
"I was planning to turn pro immediately after
I graduated from the University of Oklahoma next June," he
said soon after his victory (Saturday, July 21). "But after I
heard where they are playing next year, I may have to re-think
that."
The 96th annual Southern Amateur is scheduled July
17-20, 2002, at East Lake Golf Club in Decatur, Georgia. East Lake
is widely regarded as the home course of the legendary Bobby
Jones. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 1963, the PGA Tour Championship
last November and the U.S. Amateur in August.
"For the chance to play East Lake, I may want
to come back and defend next year," added Freeman, 22, who
was playing in his first Southern Amateur and for the first time
at Crown Colony, one of the top-rated courses in Texas.
Freeman birdied three of the last four holes to
pull out the victory. Playing in the group in front of the
leaders, Freeman dropped two strokes behind after hitting his tee
shot into the water at the par-3 12th hole. But he rallied with
birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 18 to finish with 68-282. .'It was the
only bad shot I hit all day ," he said, referring to the
wayward 6-iron. "I just pulled it."
Former Louisiana State University golfer Alan
Morgan of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was second at 72-284. When word
filtered back to the last group that Freeman finished at six under
par, Morgan was forced to eagle the par-5 18th to tie
and that's something only four players had done all week - two the
first round and two more the third day.
Instead, Morgan preserved solo second when he
saved par from behind the green after driving into the right
rough. "I just didn't putt very well today ," Morgan
said, "In fact, I was playing defensively most of the week
and that's not me. Normally, I like to play more
aggressively." Morgan, who began the final round tied for the
lead, bogied 3 and 4, birdied 5 and 6, then finished with 12
straight pars.
Tied for third at 285 were Bill Haas of Greer,
South Carolina, Matt Brost of Mansfield, Texas, and Lee Williams
of Alexander City, Alabama. Haas shot 71 with five birdies and
four bogies, Brost 72 on three birdies and as many bogies,
Williams 73 with four birdies, three bogies and a double.
Freeman, who earned all-Big 12 honors at OU, said
his performance wasn't as erratic as his scores indicate:
75-66-73-68, "I just had a few bad holes here and there. The
first round, I hit the same shot at 12 as I hit today, but 1
didn't make any birdies." He had six birdies Thursday and
shared the halfway lead after posting the lowest score of the
tournament. I played well Friday but made two double bogies. I
would up with nearly as many doubles (four) as bogies
(five)." He had 19 birdies.
Freeman finished one stroke lower than the winner
had the only other time the Southern Amateur was played at Crown
Colony. Rob McNamara of Frankfort, Kentucky, totaled 283 in 1987.
Defending champion Ryan Hybl of Colbert, Georgia, tied for 14th
at 294.
Texas won the Bob Jones Team Trophy based on the
four lowest scorers from each state after 36 holes. Contributing
for Texas were Zach Atkinson and Zack Robinson at 141 and Doug
Manor at and Matt Brost at 143, for a team total of 569. Florida
was second at 585 and Georgia third at 590.
The par-4 10th hole proved to be the
most difficult with a stroke average of 4.62. The par-5 18th
was second, 5.49, and the par-3 16th third, 3.46. The
par-5 13th was the easiest, 4.88. Overall, the par-72
course, playing most of its 6,692 yards, averaged 76.92. The
36-hole cut, trimming the 156-player field to the low 66 and ties,
fell at 10 over par 154.

A traditional part of the Southern Amateur, and of
great import to the players, is the Team Championship, in which
the four best 36 hole scores from each state represent that state
as a team. The team with the lowest cumulative score earns the Bob
Jones Team Trophy for each player. In the 2001 championship, host
stateTexas was the State Team Champion, represented by the
following players:
Zach Atkinson, Coppell |

Zack Robinson, Ft. Worth |
